Free Anti-Virus Security - Coming to a PC near you in 2009

Microsoft has announced plans to dump its retail version of Windows Live OneCare security suite, at the end of June 30, 2009, and offering instead “Morro,” a free, stripped-down anti-malware application.

Morro could signal the end of bloated security software (yay) and annual fees (double yay) for programs that, at least in theory, keep viruses, spyware, rootkits, Trojans, and other online offenders at bay. Morro will be available in mid-2009 as a free download for Windows XP, Windows Vista - and Vista II. Did I say Vista II? My bad, I mean ”Windows 7″.

The losers are of course the major security software developers, including McAfee; Symantec, maker of the Norton software programs, and Trend Micro. For years they’ve run a profitable business selling antimalware programs to consumers, but from mid-2009 that market will be virtually dead. And may they rest in peace. These resource hogs got bigger and more bloated each year often burying themselves so deep they became malware themselves.

It has been argued that security should be a core feature of any operating system. Microsoft, whatever its true intentions, is perhaps doing something right here. It may not be any more effective, but it will be effectively free. And that will be good enough for most home and many small business users.  Will they be able to compete with the Mac’s ability to deliver a relatively malware-free experience? I doubt it.
